- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Start by washing and drying your chosen apples. Carefully core them, creating a hollow center without splitting the apple. Drizzle the insides of the apples with lemon juice to enhance their flavor and prevent browning.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and a pinch of salt. Pour in the melted butter, and toss in some chopped walnuts or pecans. Combine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Generously spoon the crisp topping mixture into the cavity of each apple.
- Place the filled apples upright in a baking dish and add a splash of water to the bottom. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
- Let these beauties cool for a few minutes before serving. They are delightful on their own or served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Ensure to choose apples that hold their structure during baking and always add lemon juice to enhance flavor.
