Ingredients

Group: Ingredients
  • 4 medium-sized Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • a pinch salt

Equipment

  • Baking dish
  • Mixing bowl
  • Paring knife
  • Aluminum foil

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Start by washing and drying your chosen apples. Carefully core them, creating a hollow center without splitting the apple. Drizzle the insides of the apples with lemon juice to enhance their flavor and prevent browning.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and a pinch of salt. Pour in the melted butter, and toss in some chopped walnuts or pecans. Combine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Generously spoon the crisp topping mixture into the cavity of each apple.
  4. Place the filled apples upright in a baking dish and add a splash of water to the bottom. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  5. Let these beauties cool for a few minutes before serving. They are delightful on their own or served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Ensure to choose apples that hold their structure during baking and always add lemon juice to enhance flavor.
